Lion Sands Ivory Lodge closes after fire

Lion Sands Ivory Lodge, a prestigious safari destination in South Africa’s Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, has temporarily halted operations due to a fire incident on 5 December 2024. The blaze, sparked by extreme weather conditions, has impacted several key areas of the lodge.

All guests and staff were safely evacuated following emergency protocols, with no reported injuries. The fire was quickly contained thanks to the prompt action of trained lodge staff, local emergency services, and neighbouring properties.

Extent of damage and closure

The fire affected the lodge’s kitchen, dining room, bar, and office facilities. However, guest rooms, spa, fitness centre, and reception areas remained unscathed. The lodge will stay closed while a comprehensive damage assessment is conducted and necessary repairs are completed.

While Lion Sands Ivory Lodge undergoes restoration, its sister property, Lion Sands River Lodge, continues to operate normally. The reservations team is working to make alternative arrangements for affected guests.

Management’s response

Robert More, Custodian and CEO of MORE Family Collection, expressed gratitude for the swift response from the Bushbuckridge Fire Department and neighbouring lodges. He emphasised the priority of completing a thorough assessment and restoration to maintain the lodge’s exceptional standards.
