Newcastle Airport is preparing for a historic moment, with Jetstar set to launch the city’s first ever ongoing international service outside Australasia. Starting 21 October 2025, the new direct connection to Denpasar (Bali) marks a major step forward for the Hunter region, boosting tourism, trade and international visibility.
The announcement, backed by the NSW Government’s Aviation Attraction Fund, comes as Newcastle Airport nears completion of its new international terminal. Once operational, the terminal will open doors to a new era of connectivity and opportunity for regional New South Wales.
With three weekly services, the direct Newcastle–Denpasar route connects the Hunter not just to Indonesia but to one of Southeast Asia’s major international hubs, with onward access to over 40 countries.
Regional NSW joins the global network
“This is a game changer for the Hunter,” said Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley.
“We’re not just opening the door to Bali—we’re opening our region up to the world.”
Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper added that the route signals the beginning of Newcastle’s next growth chapter. “This is Newcastle’s first ongoing international flight outside Australasia, and it sets the stage for what’s to come for the region’s visitor economy.”
Newcastle Airport CEO Linc Horton echoed the excitement, calling the new service the result of collaboration between government and industry.
“Our community has long asked for international flights from their local airport. This route is proof of what we can achieve together.”
Travel made easier, holidays made closer
Jetstar Group CEO Stephanie Tully said the service will save regional travellers time and money.
“Locals no longer need to travel to Sydney to fly overseas. Now they can begin their holiday from their doorstep.”
The NSW Government’s Aviation Attraction Fund, managed by Destination NSW, supported the initiative with financial incentives and marketing backing. The fund also recently helped secure new services into Sydney from Istanbul and Shanghai.
With Bali paving the way, Newcastle is ready for take-off into a new international era.
