South Australia charts new course with CLIA partnership

South Australia is set to strengthen its position as a premier cruise destination through a new partnership with Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), announced this week by the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC).

As a newly appointed Executive Partner in Australasia, SATC will work alongside CLIA’s network of cruise lines, travel agents, ports, and tourism operators to enhance the state’s visibility across the global cruise industry.

Expanding South Australia’s cruise footprint

The partnership follows the formation of the South Australian Government’s Cruise Attraction Working Group in 2024, which was established to grow cruise visitation and increase the diversity of ships calling at Adelaide and regional ports.

CLIA Managing Director Australasia Joel Katz said the partnership would help spotlight the state’s potential as a cruise destination.

“South Australia has huge potential as a cruise destination and is home to some true gems along its vast unspoiled coasts,” said Katz.

“Our partnership with SATC will help raise awareness of what’s on offer to cruise visitors – not only in Adelaide, but also in surrounding regions and ports like Port Lincoln and Kangaroo Island.”

Economic benefits and long-term tourism growth

South Australian Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison said the state is committed to cruise tourism as a key economic driver for regional communities.

“Cruise is a multi-million-dollar tourism sector for South Australia, helping support many local businesses in our regional towns, while inspiring visitors to return for a longer stay,” she said.

“Partnering with CLIA is a key outcome of our recently established Cruise Attraction Working Group, and it further raises South Australia’s profile as a leading cruise destination.”

SATC CEO Emma Terry added that the collaboration ensures the state remains top of mind among international cruise stakeholders.

“We are investing in our cruise industry – which injected a record $227 million into our visitor economy during the 2023-24 season,” she said.

“With wildlife encounters, award-winning wine regions, and one of the world’s most beautiful capital cities, South Australia offers everything cruise lines and their passengers are looking for.”

Record growth for cruise in South Australia

Cruise tourism is surging in South Australia, with over 160,000 passenger visit days recorded in the last financial year. The sector continues to support jobs and drive economic activity in cruise gateways including Adelaide, Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln.
