Explore Aotearoa in Autumn

Autumn is the optimal time to head to New Zealand for beautiful weather and minimal crowds, according to Tourism New Zealand.

The vibrant, warm hues of autumn highlight the country’s stunning natural beauty across both its North and South Islands, with Central Otago and Wānaka standout for their wine tour offerings.

For the adventure seekers

Lovers of the outdoors will appreciate the plethora of walking and hiking trails across New Zealand, and the long, sunny days that the season brings to enjoy them. Tracks range from a few hours for casual walkers to multi-day hikes for dedicated explorers. Highlights include the Tuatapere Hump Ridge and Paparoa tracks in the South Island, as well as Lake Waikaremoana Track and Tongariro Northern Circuit in the North Island.

Road trips galore

Alternatively, those looking for a more relaxed holiday may prefer to follow one of the proposed road trip routes, either a stunning 8-day Marlborough to Wānaka adventure, or a 10-day Auckland to Wellington itinerary spanning across the majority of the country’s North Island. Travellers from Australia can drive on a full Australian driver licence, but must comply with New Zealand’s road rules and take care, as routes and terrain may be unfamiliar.

Other autumnal activities

If walks and drives aren’t exactly what your client has in mind, there are several other activities on offer, including hot ballooning, kayaking and canoeing, diving and snorkelling, visiting markets, visiting the iconic Hobbiton in Matamata, culinary and dining experiences, luxury stays and retreats, immersive cultural experiences, stargazing, camping and glamping, and wildlife sightings.

Weather and packing

Autumn brings mild weather to New Zealand’s major cities, with Tourism New Zealand recommending travellers dress in layers to accommodate changes in temperature throughout the day, and to bring a warm jacket, rain and sun protection, thermals and insect repellent. Visitors should also pack travel essentials like swimsuits and hiking boots in accordance with their trip itinerary.
