Sequoia Lodge joins exclusive Relais & Chateaux collection

Sequoia Lodge in the Adelaide Hills has been accepted into the prestigious Relais & Chateaux Association, becoming the only mainland Australian property in the global network of independently owned luxury hotels and restaurants.

The announcement further cements the region’s position as a premium short-break destination for high-end domestic and international travellers.

Adelaide Hills luxury recognised on the world stage

Relais & Chateaux unites around 580 boutique properties worldwide that are independently owned and strongly connected to their local culture, gastronomy and landscape. Sequoia Lodge joins this collection as a standalone Australian mainland member, offering agents a globally recognised badge of quality to support premium positioning and rate integrity.

Developed by South Australian hotelier David Horbelt and business partner Malcolm Bean, Sequoia Lodge opened in 2021 on the historic Mount Lofty Estate. The adults-only retreat features 14 luxury suites carved into the escarpment, all with 180-degree views across the Piccadilly Valley, fireplaces, spa-style bathrooms and sky-facing ‘moon windows’.

Immersive, locally anchored experiences

Surrounded by national parks and botanical gardens, Sequoia has built its reputation on highly curated local experiences that connect guests with Adelaide Hills producers, guides and stories. More than 30 signature inclusions are available, from beekeeper encounters and cheese and wine journeys to self-drive itineraries taking in cellar doors, artisan makers, the home of R.M. Williams and wildlife encounters at Cleland Wildlife Park.

Guests also have access to artesian spring-fed hot pools, an infinity pool, walking trails, tennis, Gatekeeper’s Day Spa and the three-hatted Hardy’s Verandah Restaurant at neighbouring Mount Lofty House. Many of South Australia’s hero brands, including Penfolds Magill Estate and Jurlique’s farm, are within easy reach, making the property a strong base for short luxury itineraries.

Strong trade appeal for high-end short breaks

Located just 30 minutes from Adelaide Airport at the summit of Mount Lofty, Sequoia Lodge is well placed for fly-stay escapes, pre- or post-cruise extensions and premium wine and food packages. Its award-winning credentials – including multiple Australian Hotels Association and state tourism awards, plus TripAdvisor recognition – give the trade a compelling proposition for affluent couples and celebration travel.

As part of the Australian Bespoke Collective alongside Mount Lofty House and The Reef House in Palm Cove, Sequoia also sits within a broader portfolio of independently owned luxury properties with strong trade engagement and commissionable product.
